Grandparents Day

dunboynesps

We recently celebrated Catholic Schools Week in Dunboyne Senior Primary School. This year’s theme was Alive in Christ. Wednesday of Catholic School’s week was Grandparents Day and we were delighted to invite the Grandparents of our 3rd class children in for our first ever Tea and Tech event.

We have been taking part in the Microsoft Dream Space Ambassadors programme this year and a group of 3rd and 5th class students have been taking part in monthly training sessions. The Dream Space Ambassador Program is a Student Leadership and training program, supported by the Microsoft Dream Space Team in Dublin and Belfast. As part of this program, we take part in virtual training sessions to become Dream Space Ambassadors. We then share what we have learned by offering assistance to fellow students and the wider school community. Our ambassadors have worked with different classes throughout the school to share their knowledge of how to code a MicroBit. The micro:bit is a programmable device that allows students to get hands-on with coding and digital making. We have visited 3rd, 4th and 5th classes and supported students as they have learned to code the Microbit.

The latest training sessions was called ‘Older Wiser Learners OWL’. Today we live in a world dominated by rapid advances in technology. Our goal is to make sure that our older, wiser learners are not left behind in this digital world. That is why we invited our Grandparents in to celebrate Grandparents Day and help raise awareness about cyber security. Topics included the importance of strong passwords, tips on how to spot a scam and how to spot a deep fake. After the presentation our 3rd class students sang ‘You’ve got a Friend in Me’ and our school choir sang ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars. A group of Irish dancers also performed a variety or reels and jigs. Our student council gave a lovely speech about the importance of our grandparents and shared some of their favourite memories with their grandparents and Robyn from 3rd class read a lovely poem. This very special occasion concluded with some tea and biscuits and time for the children to chat with their Grandparents and show them around the school.

It was a wonderful event to celebrate our Grandparents who play such an important role in the lives of their Grandchildren.
