We celebrated National Tree Day on the 3rd of October. National Tree Day is a special event organised each year by the Tree Council of Ireland, with the support of its members and Green-Schools, and proudly sponsored by SPAR. One of the main aims of the day is to educate primary school children about the importance of trees and natural resources in our everyday lives.
This year the theme was ‘Trees are Magic’ – Tá draoicht ag baint le crainn – and we celebrated the wonderful Hawthorn tree, sometimes called the Whitethorn or the May Bush – Crataegus monogyna or An Sceach Geal. We received our Hawthorn sapling and 3rd class students enjoyed planting it at the front of our school grounds. We look forward to watching this tiny tree grow in years to come.
Some classes went on tree trails to learn more about trees and the importance of trees to our environment and other classes created some beautiful art work to mark the occasion.
3rd class students are taking part in the GLOBE Ireland Autumn Tree Campaign and have begun tracking the colour changes of four leaves on a silver birch tree.
